The instability of the cometary plasma tail--the instability in plasma
sheet
Liu Lin-Zhong,
Purple Moutain Observatory, Academia Sinica, Nanjing, 210008
Let us consider two tangential discontinuity parabolic cylindrical
interfaces separating three plasmas for the plasma sheet, the lobes of
ion tail, and the solar wind, respectively. The plasma is assumed to be
highly conducting and incompressible. The unstable state yields a
magnetic field which is perpendicular to the tailward in plasma sheet.
Our result is consistent with the ICE plasma observations.
