Announcements of newly discovered comets usually appear first on IAU Circulars and the number of the circular is given in the column headed "IAUC". Announcements of new names can appear either on IAU Circulars or on Minor Planet Electronic Circulars and the reference is given in the column headed "IAUC - MPEC". Simple numbers refer to IAU Circulars while numbers preceded by a single letter refer to MPECs, implicitly preceded by the current year. Occasionally an MPEC appears announcing a comet shortly before the IAU Circular but since this is mostly a matter of varying electronic transmission times, we have listed the IAU Circular when one was issued on the same day. The date of naming is implicitly in the current year. The Notes column usually gives the name of the individual(s) who discovered the cometary activity, whether independently or because of requests based on the orbit (which are often posted on the NEO Confirmation Page of the Minor Planet Center). This column is also used to indicate unusual characteristics (Centaur, possible short-period orbit, etc.)
