General Assembly XXVI

The division held more business sessions at this GA than ever in the past, partly in order to deal with organizational issues and partly to discuss the definition of a planet, a recommendation for which was presented to the General Assembly at the opening session. The IAU Executive Committee's ad hoc Planet Definition Committee had been discussing the issue for many months and the GA was the first opportunity for anyone outside the committee to hear their recommendation. There was, not surprisingly, considerable discussion in some of the Division III sessions, but all official actions were taken at the General Assembly.

The minutes for the regular business session are available as a PDF file. The discussions of the definition of a planet, which had no binding force on the General Assembly or the Executive Committee, are contained in an Appendix to the minutes, which also include an alternative proposal that was made by several members of the division.
